CHAPTER 2: THE EXPLANATION

When the children are done expounding what their labels mean, Gaby explains to them what they mean. She begins by pointing out that being angry is not a sin, “It’s what we do with that anger that determines whether it is a sin or not. Anger is simply an unresolved hurt; The Bible says ‘Be angry and do not sin, do not let the sun go down on your anger’ (Ephesians 4:26). Shame says, ‘there’s something wrong with me’; maybe you do not have that disorder. Perhaps you have buried emotions because of the wrong beliefs about shame. Shame came into the garden after eating from the tree of good and evil; Adam and Eve covered themselves with fig leaves. They did not want to be seen. They felt unworthy and embarrassed. Their disobedience to God’s commands created shame. Before they sinned, Adam and Eve ‘were both naked, and they felt no shame’ (Genesis 2:25), but now they are naked and ashamed. When God asks why they are hiding, they sense something is wrong with them and not just their actions.”
Gaby pauses for a second to see if there’s anyone who has a question or is in need of clarification. When there isn’t, she proceeds, “Then there is guilt. It’s the bad feeling we get when we know we have sinned. Cammy, can you give us an example of something you did in the course of the week which made you feel guilty.”
    “Nothing.” Cammy says uninterestedly.
“Come on!” The sisters tell him.
“Alright, alright. There’s this friend of mine at school. He refused to let me play with him and so I started calling him names and I feel very bad about it.” Says Cammy.

“Perfect example there. It’s wrong to call other people names no matter what they do to you and if you do you’ll feel bad unless you ask for forgiveness. The truth is, we truly can have confidence that the Jesus that came to save us is willing to forgive us, and he does! Because when God forgives, He forgets. This truth is repeatedly affirmed in the Scripture.
The children are eager to learn more from Gaby and she continues.

“According to (Psalm 103:12) God has removed our sin from us as far as the east is from the west. God wants us to start laying aside every weight…….
